"My paintings are based on an emotional response to the sea. It is important to me that I paint where I feel a great affinity. Living all my childhood beside the sea, it is close to my heart and memories play a big part in my work. I strive to achieve the essence of the sea, to distil the image without losing it completely.
I like to look and respond to the ever-changing weather conditions and times of the day that cannot easily be defined. Some of my paintings are meditative and others more stimulating just like the moods of the sea. I feel my work is like painting a portrait, sharing the changing emotions and character of a person. It is only when you look and learn all the changing emotions and character of a person or place that you can make a painting that is interesting and meaningful. I have always imagined that in painting a place, I somehow become part of it, and it of me."
