Adrian Bates
Adrian Bates
Based in Stroud, Adrian Bates worked in the field of graphic design for a number of years but felt stifled by the lack of self expression and creative freedom in his role. It was after a short sabbatical that he ventured into a new role as a Craft tutor and Adrian had a chance to immerse himself in a variety of tactile working methods which would eventually lead to him becoming a full time artist in 2012.
Adrian states that his work seeks to explore the relationship between inner space and outer form; where they meet and merge one into the other. This sprang from an interest in typography and calligraphy but extends to all organic forms.
Throwing and hand-building his pieces from black and white stoneware clays, Adrian displays an inherent understanding of structure and form his work managing to simultaneously fool and dazzle the eye of the viewer.
You can view his work in our contemporary ceramics collection.
