Ann Wegmuller RSW RWS
Perthshire based artist Ann Wegmuller graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee in the mid – Eighties. She was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour in 2001 and later a full member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 2007. She has also won a variety of awards including most recently the City of Glasgow College Award RSW in 2018.
It was while viewing a Matisse exhibition in Paris in the early Nineties that Ann felt a liberating urge to apply colour as she felt it should be and not as it was. This personal revelation set her on the path that would lead to her developing a style of nuanced abstraction in a unique palette.
Colour is overwhelmingly important to Ann, so much so that she suspects it may often be the subject of the paintings themselves. Each colour, she believes, has its own individual beauty that can be enhanced or toned down with another colour and the most exciting results stem from this contrast. For Ann the pictorial reality of a particular place is of little interest; what drives her work is the discovery of unexpected hues and shapes that transform the landscape in her mind into something else entirely.
