Barry Stedman
Barry Stedman
Born in Watford, Barry Stedman came to ceramics later in life after a successful career in retail. Studying at the University of Westminster and graduating with First Class Honours, he now balances his own creative output with work as a studio assistant at Edmund De Waal’s London studio.
Often developing a series of work influenced by natural phenomena, places and emotions, Barry develops ideas from drawings paintings and previous firings. He enjoys the warmth and brightness of earthenware using slip, oxides and underglazes over a red clay body. he creates his surfaces in layers, firing in between using thin washes and wiping them back to create rich zones of colour. He utilises the tensions and harmonies inherent in his chosen medium to create work that possesses a vibrant, textural energy.
