Elaine Cunningham
Angus based artist Elaine Cunningham graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in 2002. She has since earned herself a loyal following with her atmospheric approach to sea and landscapes.
Elaine views the majority of her paintings as an emotional response to the sea. Having lived all of her childhood on the coast, it is close to both her heart and her memories. She strives to capture the essence of the sea and distil it into a single image without losing a sense of its untameable power.
Elaine works in layers of oils, charcoal and beeswax. Her canvases are reflective of the ever-changing weather conditions that roil and churn the waves. This is reflected in her process, with some paintings creating a calm and meditative atmosphere and others a wild and tempestuous one. Elaine has always imagined that in painting a place it will somehow become a part of her and vice versa. A feeling that viewers of her work can share.
