Judith Bridgland
Australian born Judith Bridgland graduated with a Masters degree in Fine Art History from the University of Glasgow before embarking on a career as an artist. She was a winner of numerous awards including the 1999 MacRoberts Open Prize and the Glasgow Art Club Award in 2016. She currently works from her studio in Glasgow.
Judith states that her work is an expression of a particular moment within a landscape and not simply a depiction of the land itself. She chooses to paint locations that she returns to more than once and as a result they form a reflection of a cumulative experience rather than that of a single visitation. In this sense she sees her work as a form of emotive landscape portraiture, depicting her relationship with a specific place over time.
Working in oils, Judith applies her paint in a bold impasto style and works into each composition with detailed brushwork and mark making to accentuate detail and depth. This combination of traditional painterly techniques and expressive abstraction ensures that her landscapes amplify the deep connection she feels with them.
