Philip Richardson
Hawkhurst based Philip Richardson studied Fine Art at St Albans and Liverpool. This was before going on to a career as a lecturer. Moving to Italy and then Spain, Philip continued to develop his distinctive style of painting. He then returned to the UK in 2013. He continues to live and work in his Kent studio.
Philip sees landscape and still life as being his favoured themes. He believes that all ideas are obtained by observation. His selection of a particular scene or set-up are carefully considered. Although he considers these choices to be entirely subjective, he strives for an innate sense of accuracy in his depictions.
Working in oil, Philip employs a bold, almost graphic style of painting, where complex forms are transformed into concise yet expressive brushstrokes that, in the context of the piece are suggestive of more complex shapes and details. This skillful mastery of light and form allows the viewer to add their own interpretation to the piece yet still have the artist’s invisible hand guiding them along and evoking a strong sensation of time and place.
