Originally from Scone, Perthshire, James Somerville Lindsay studied Graphic Design at Glasgow School of Art in the seventies. He then enjoyed a long and successful career in Advertising and Design. In the mid-noughties, James focused on his lifelong passion for painting and work toward becoming a full time artist.
Inspired by the great Impressionist masters, his early years as a full time artist were spent following in their footsteps through the South of France. Travelling the landscapes abroad and at home in his reliable camper van allowed him to develop the plein air style of painting he is now known for.
Equally at home working on location as in a studio environment, James paints in oils. This is often in short time frames on ten to twenty pieces simultaneously. Working in these short bursts on each piece allows him to retain a loose, expressive quality to his compositions. This captures the fleeting moments of light and shadow that render the ordinary extraordinary.
