Flowers, Jugs and Bowls

Scottish artist Mary Davidson, one of Scotland’s most accomplished still life painters, has exhibited widely across the Uk and internationally. She studied at Glasgow School of Art. Later in her career, she has since been recognised by the Royal Glasgow Institute (RGI), the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW) and the Laing Art Exhibitions.

Mary works in oils which suit her fluid, painterly style. She has a very sure sense of colour and composition. Mary enjoys painting a range of subjects in an expressive manner, which captures light and colour. She describes her paintings as being less concerned with capturing a scene with complete accuracy. This is rather as responses to the moods and atmospheres generated by landscapes and still life.

The studio is key to Mary’s process. She enjoys being able to control the lighting , and create drama by introducing directional light and shade to her still life compositions. She uses a range of palette knives and large, flat brushes, which allow her to keep the mark-making loose. All her colours are carefully mixed and by limiting her palette, she achieves a feeling of harmony and unity within her work.
